National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo or just NaNo) consists of writing 50,000 words during the month of November. It is a sobering challenge. I failed in my 2012 attempt. In self defense, I began outlining and making notes as far back as July 2013. So I was ready when 1 November rolled around. I knew where I was going. On the evening of 27 November I achieved my goal with 50,101 words.
In order to accomplish this I had no time to pause for editing an awkward sentence, or to consider a better way to make my point. That’s a different phase –editing. I have some serious work to do before these word I’ve threaded together are ready for a critical second pair of eyes
Why have I done this? Why have I launched myself into a task that requires the generation of no less than 1,670 words each and every day?
To train myself to focus, to force myself to stay on topic and hammer out those words in spite of my attitude.
Was it worth the effort?
