Punctuation

I have an English question concerning punctuation in the King James Holy Bible.

In the Old Testament the first word after a question mark begins with a lowercase letter (the question mark seems to be treated like a comma…I’m guessing). Is that because there are no quotation marks used? Obviously, punctuation was different during the period of translation – 1604 to 1611? Does anyone know when quotation marks came into use?

I would research these answers myself, but I hardly know where to start.

Cormac McCarthy doesn’t use quotes in his novels. It’s difficult in the beginning.Punctuation
