Word of the day: Panoply
One spring morning in the West Indies I stepped outside prior to sunrise to watch an aircraft land. As though I was visiting a neighboring planet the sky suddenly turned coppery horizon-to-horizon in every direction. For an instant I felt trapped.

You must have experienced a panoply of emotions that morning. Why was trapped one of them?

It was a moment of panic like being in a dark closet

Maybe I should explain myself better. We were in the midst of the cold war. Not so many
months earlier the Communists had tried to do to the Dominican Republic what they’d tried
in Cuba. But we were ready that time. We had an alert pad with with a wings of B-52s loaded with nearly 50 H-bombs cocked
and ready to be in the air in less than ten minutes.
My first thought was we had taken a nuclear strike – light travels fastest.
