I have some coming up as well, about the same size as what you have-but I didn’t plant it. It’s growing very fast in a small area with just one tomato plant-it should be fine. The only problem is that opossums find them, typically the night before I would have picked them I never plant them anymore because I never get any! I can’t figure out a way to keep them from getting to them.
Also, I don’t think possums can climb. You could drive a few sticks around your patch and hang some 2′ chicken wire on the sticks, securing the wire with zip ties.

You might check s seed company like Burpee. They sell a net to protect cherries from birds.
